TOYOTA FOUNDATION GRANTS CACS PROJECT YEAR 2

On 17 Oct. 2018, Dean of Faculty of Social Sciences, CACS Director Napisa Waitoolkiat and Prof. Katsuyuki Takahashi travelled to Tokyo to take part in an lnternational Grant Ceremony from The Toyota Foundation for the project entitled “Locating Peace through harmonizing Religion, Gender, and Age: The Cases of Thailand’s Deep South and Indonesia’s Aceh.” It is the second year of our project funded by the Toyota Foundation.

This project examines the multigenerational and multicultural inclusion of women in conflict zones with regard to the principal issues that they face. The target cases are Thailand’s Deep South and Indonesia’s semi-autonomous Aceh province, two regions which have experienced armed conflict and secession attempts. These conflicts have killed, injured and infringed upon human rights, especially those of women and young people. Women, as victims of conflicts and sexual violence, bear the brunt of discrimination in patriarchal societies. Meanwhile, young people tend to be principal targets of security forces. At the same time, women and young people have played key roles in peace building. Through the construction of common understanding about the particular challenges in these two conflict zones, this project aims at improving cooperation among various stakeholders with different convictions within each region towards establishing peace. We will collect information in Thailand’s Deep South and Indonesia’s Aceh about problems relating to cultural/gender-related differences as well as age-based dilemmas in an effort to locate solutions. We will also organize forums in several non-Deep South provinces to disseminate information, raise awareness about Deep South issues among Thai people and push these issues onto the national agenda in Thailand to end the violence.
